Passiflora or Passion
Flower
Passion flower or Passiflora Incarnata, is a native of North America and is a
naturally grown medicinal herb, which is approved by the German Commission E in the treatment of insomnia and
nervousness.
It is also used as a sedative in nervous disorders (including stomach
complaints of nervous
origin), difficulties in sleeping, and anxiety or
restlessness.
The name Passionflower arose because the corona resembles Christ's crown of
thorns.
Some herbalists find passiflora especially good for when worry and an
overactive mind interferes with sleep.
Typical dosage is 20 to 40 drops of tincture in water, or an infusion of half a
teaspoon of the dried herb, steeped in a big mug of hot water for 10 minutes, before bedtime.
Caution: Do not take with momoamine oxidase-inhibiting antidepressants, and
check with your doctor before taking high doses if pregnant.
